Hayley van Ree uses her body and the objects around her to express her lowbrow philosophies. In doing this she is generally accepted as an artist, or possibly some sort of conceptual fashionista. If these labels allow her to continue exploring the world through object, body and fabric in some way then she is happy to have them.
She usually locates the products of this philosophising and exploration in the environment of the night club or festival. High-energy environments often not specifically designed for anything which can be classified as ‘art’, although they welcome and accommodate it. Hayley tends to work in this capacity as she does not believe in occupying a quiet or elitist space for critical artistic, visionary or profound discourse. Instead she is of the belief that the more we normalise this kind of conversation the quicker, as a species, we might evolve our thoughts and beliefs.
