Jessie Brooks-Dowsett grew up between the lush bush of the Dandenong ranges and beautifully dramatic beaches of Sydney’s eastern suburbs. This proximity and connection to nature informs her current art practise, sense of wellbeing and identity. Jessie is a gestural abstract expressionist. She engages her senses and uses her body as a conduit for the art making materials, exploring the relationship between self, experiences and environment. Working in a mix of acrylic, inks, pastels and coloured pencils, she sinks into moments and spaces, opening up a dialogue between the sounds and sensations of her environment and the responses of her body. Jessie uses experimental methods to create marks on paper or canvas that speak to this instinctual bodily responses capturing the reaction or recollection of her experiencing.
