A disembodied finger, floating mid-air

Olivia Guardiani
Sean Peoples

11 November 2021–27 November 2021

A visual illusion that is seen when the forefingers of each hand are held horizontally about 30 centimetres in front of the eyes, with the fingertips touching and the gaze focused on a point in the distance, and the fingertips are then drawn apart about one centimetre. A disembodied finger appears floating in mid-air, and it can be lengthened or shortened by varying the distance between the fingertips (see exhibition).

  • Olivia Guardiani is currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture and Spatial Practice at the Victorian College of the Arts. She works primarily with materiality through the process of casting and mould making to explore the boundaries of a material. This reflects how an imprint of a memory can be both malleable and static.
  • Sean Peoples graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor in Fine Art in 2006. He has exhibited in Australia, USA, Spain, France, Germany and India. In addition to his solo practice, Sean is also one half of The Telepathy Project, a collaboration formed in 2005 with artist Veronica Kent. He is represented by STATION.
