On purchasing a star

HeeJoon Youn

18 May 2023–10 June 2023

On purchasing a star embraces the escapist nature of wish-making and understands it as a necessary form of release in the face of overwhelming impotence. This exhibition acknowledges the importance of the reflective time spent daydreaming about an altered reality and posits the significance of wish-making as the moment where one fantasises about what could be. As a shooting star blazes across the sky, there is but a fleeting moment to make a wish. In that momentary pause, we fantasise about a reality in which the wish comes true. Recognising the power in perhaps a naive way of retreating from the world, shooting stars and wishing wells become a conduit that offers a respite from the confines of everyday life.

On Purchasing a Star is supported by the City of Melbourne’s Annual Arts Grant.
