With its title borrowed from Constantin Brâncuși’s 1932–1940 polished bronze sculptures, Bird in Space explores affect as something constituted through form rather than simply being represented by it. Through a material exploration of bronze, casting and welding, Bird in Space takes on the form of a saddle, but is less interested in representation as the sole function of form than in what form itself might produce.
In material, contour and orientation, Bird in Space is a reservoir of histories, a gendered charge, past lives—the stuff of fear, resentment, joy and desire. Swilling around is a trap and a freedom, a foggy memory unsure of what came first.
