Throwing Off the Hump

Ali McCann

Side Gallery
8 Apr 2017–29 Apr 2017
Opening 12.00am 1 Jan 1970

Deriving its title from a labour-efficient potting technique, Throwing Off the Hump is a multi-channel video installation that ruminates on the Sisyphean burden of memory. Using looped cuts of found Super-8 footage salvaged from a technical college in the artist’s hometown, the works serve as an unburdening of grief through repetitive labour, such that the labour and the unburdening become the same act.

  • Ali McCann is a Melbourne based visual artist working predominantly with photography, video, sound and installation. The current exhibition forms part of her ongoing examination of found imagery and its potential for altered meanings and reassigned values. Ali McCann is currently undertaking a Master of Contemporary Art at VCA. She has exhibited in solo and group shows at West Space, Bus Projects, TCB Art Inc, c3 Contemporary Art Space, Chalk Horse (Sydney) and China Heights (Sydney). Ali McCann is also a musician in the Melbourne based band, Beaches.
