Untitled Spaces

Guy Grabowsky

Front Gallery
17 Mar 2018–7 Apr 2018

“Photography has no reality, it is almost one hundred percent a picture”
Gerhard Richter, 1991

Untitled Spaces comprises a series of framed wall-sized colour analogue c type photographic prints. Applying a mix of conventional and non-conventional darkroom processes, using film in conjunction with painterly interventions, camera-less abstract images are handprinted. Images residing between existence and the abyss suggest a human presence which permeates the composition. Untitled Spaces is a contemplation of The Image, employing abstraction to scrutinise the function of photographic representation.

  • Guy Grabowsky explores the construction and function of the contemporary image through photographic abstraction and intervention. Images are made using film with conventional and non-conventional analogue darkroom processes. Utilising a range of materials organic and inorganic, Guy integrates layers into the composition, creating new dynamics within the image and transforming its representational origin. The prints, due to their scale, multilayered surfaces and curved edge often floating off the wall, convey a weight beyond that of a conventional photograph. The images freely absorb the multitudes of subjective visual assumptions, associations, and memories which the viewer brings to them. Guy graduated from the VCA in 2016 and a been a recipient of a number of prizes, including the Fiona Myer award, Mount Buller Residency award. He has exhibited in a number of group and solo exhibitions throughout Melbourne in galleries including Bus projects, Seventh and Margret Lawrence.
