Body of Law

Camille Laddawan

30 January 2025–23 February 2025

Through life, we are shaped by various authorial systems, including the legal frameworks of the state, and religious ideologies. Sometimes these systems affect us in obvious ways, and sometimes unconsciously. Body of Law explores the process of trying to come into awareness of the authorities that have framed us, in the context of parenting. How do inherited beliefs direct the way we — in positions of parental power — in turn shape the course of a new life? What beliefs do we concur with, and which ones subjugate us against our own spirituality and ethics? How do we position ourselves within the mosaic of conviction performed by religion and law?

  • Camille Laddawan’s practice is centred on beading. Her work is often inscribed with fragments of text and music notation by way of a visual code. Through these codes, her work comments on the nature of language. By drawing on personal encounters, Camille examines how institutions use language to structure experience, and how systems of language affect individuals.
