Kings Artist Run conclude their Nite Art program with the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle, sit back and immerse yourself in a meditative sound piece assembled from field recordings of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Suddenly woken by the sound of stillness is built from explorations of movement, memory and place, and investigates their role in shaping perceptions of sound. In tracing David Evans’ 2015 journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway, this aural document was originally released on London-based experimental ambient label Flaming Pines, and excavates the porous boundaries between documentation and creation, actuality and imagination. The piece traces the same arc as Evans’ original trip, but does so in order to weave a new journey out of the rhythm and cadences of life on the train.
Duration 42 minutes, 3 movements:
- Beijing to Ulaanbaatar (10:45)
- Ulaanbaatar to Irkutsk (10:25)
- Irkutsk to Moscow (20:32)
