Deaf Culture and d/Deaf Awareness with Luke King

Saturday 27th August, 2:00 – 4:00pm

Location: KINGS Artist-Run

Book your tickets HERE

This session aims to generate interest in the unique aspects of Deaf language and culture. Led by Deaf artist Luke King, the session will include an introduction to Auslan and a brief overview of Deaf history. Auslan is a visual language that is completely distinct from English and other spoken languages. Luke will discuss diversity amongst the d/Deaf community, communication etiquette and demonstrate some introductory Auslan signs.

The latter half of the session will cover the use of Auslan and other access methods for d/Deaf people in arts spaces. Luke will also highlight the work of local and international d/Deaf artists. This will be followed by a Q and A with workshop participants.

Access note: KINGS Artist-Run is a wheelchair accessible venue, unfortunately there is no wheelchair accessible toilet. This event will be delivered in Auslan with english interpreters present for hearing audiences. We endeavor to make this a COVIDSafe event, masks will be available and social distancing will be encouraged.
