Pucker

Anna McDermott
Kaitlyn Hickey

09 June 2018–30 June 2018

Opening Friday 8 June
The conversations and physical exchanges between two artists see information, space, materials and ideas to be literally and metaphorically ‘Puckered’. Embracing a trust in what can evolve from spontaneity, both artists gather fragments of their own practices to collaboratively form new works that use the body and material to explore themes of collecting and constricting trace and touch. Through this an archive of gestures will emerge and at once question what it means to gather/contract/fold. Working with (and against) one another, Anna McDermott and Kaitlyn Hickey investigate the intimate and uncomfortable action that is to ‘Pucker’.

  • Anna McDermott is an artist, arts worker, and writer based in Naarm/Melbourne, working across visual and performing arts contexts. Her practice traverses image-making, spatial practice, language and sound to contemplate how the body comes to be marked, inhibited and remade through choreographic systems. She is interested in what images and words do… and how this ‘doing’ may be undone. Anna holds a Masters of Contemporary Art from the VCA, 2020, and a Bachelor of Fine Art, Honours from RMIT University, 2016. In 2017, she was awarded the Nillumbik Prize, and in 2020, the Fiona Myer Art + Australia Award. Anna works as Executive Producer at Temperance Hall, and previously worked as Executive Producer at The Substation.
  • Kaitlyn Hickey is an artist living and working in Melbourne. Her practice is concerned with an ongoing personal archive, fluid in both structure and outcome. She is interested in how textile matter functions as a document of time, movement and learning. Her work also investigates sewing and installation as private performative acts, and how much of these performances trickle over into being public. Her practice looks at the way textile knowledge is often acquired and translated through making and generational gesture.
