Con ngựa con gửi con ngựa cha – Dear Father Horse

Minh-An Pham

18 June 2026–12 July 2026

I was born in the year of the horse, so was my father. When he was alive, he usually took me to the DVD store to buy animated DVDs. In 2023, my mom gave me his funeral DVD. It took me a while to build up the courage to play it — unfortunately, it didn’t work.

Con ngựa con gửi con ngựa cha is a two-channel video project, containing two moving image works — 14 years and the first time and The last DVD. 14 years and the first time is a performance-based video exploring the first time I burnt joss paper clothes for my dad — a ritual my mom usually performed. On the other hand, The last DVD is like the final trip when I sat behind him on his motorbike to go to the DVD store, however, this time, he was the one choosing the DVD for me. The work reconstructs what might have been on the broken DVD, based on my memories and interviews with family members. The project is a process of reconciliation with my dad, to forgive and to admit the happy moments we spent together.

  • Minh-An Pham is a Vietnamese artist from Sai Gon, currently living and studying in Naarm/Melbourne. He uses photography as the main means to express his ego. An’s photography practice revolves around themes of family, queer love, and the delicate relationship between dream and reality. With the curiosity to rummage through his feelings, he seeks answers for the correlation between emptiness, dreams in reality and emotions hidden by himself and the people around him.
