Leonel Alvarado (Aotearoa New Zealand/ Honduras) teaches Spanish language and Latin American cultural studies at both Massey University of New Zealand and, through a teaching agreement, at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia. He has published more than a dozen books of poetry, short stories and criticism, and has received many international awards. He researches nationalism, music, immigration, and identity, particularly through Central American national anthems, and examines travel writing’s role in shaping Latin American representations. His poetic work interweaves displacement, immigration, and violence. Two of his more recent books are Un lugar donde caerme vivo and El lirismo patriótico centroamericano: himnos, nacionalismo e identidad.
