Waxing the Hearth explores the kitchen as a space for dissent, informal gathering, and cultural exchange. Drawing inspiration from the Soviet-era “kitchen conversations” phenomenon, the kitchen functions not only as a private refuge, but a crucible for collective identity formation. By inviting artists with practices that engage with food, culture and fostering the collective we are hoping to examine how the kitchen and the specific objects and processes within it help structure our interpersonal dynamics.
Alanna Baxter, Anna Jameson, Ella Skuza, Jessica Guo, Lily Walker, Mandeep Singh, and Miracle Mak are a group of emerging Naarm-based artists working across several mediums, including moving image, painting, and sculpture. Their practices explore moments of connection and sharing through the lens of food, memory, and caretaking.
Curated by Ella Peck and KINGS’ 2024 Monash University Intern, Lucy Gordon.
